Guinea has lost one of its emblematic figures. Elhadj Boubacar Biro Diallo, former President of the National Assembly and companion of independence, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2025, in his hometown of Mamou, at the remarkable age of 105. His departure marks the end of an era and leaves a tremendous void in the country’s political and intellectual landscape.
Throughout his career, Elhadj Boubacar Biro Diallo distinguished himself through his unwavering commitment to truth and justice. As President of the National Assembly under the regime of the late General Lansana Conté, he asserted his independence of mind, never hesitating to oppose the authoritarian excesses of the ruling power. His frankness and integrity earned him the respect of his peers and the Guinean people.
His political engagement was rooted in his past as a militant for independence. A close associate of the founding fathers of modern Guinea, he always placed the country’s interests above personal ambitions. A trained teacher, he devoted much of his life to the transmission of knowledge and the education of younger generations.
Elhadj Boubacar Biro Diallo will be remembered as a staunch defender of fundamental freedoms. His refusal to compromise with those in power subjected him to considerable pressure, yet he never wavered. His courage and determination made him a role model for new generations aspiring to democracy and justice.
His voluntary retreat to Mamou, away from the turmoil of the capital, demonstrated his deep attachment to his roots and his rejection of easy honors. Until his last breath, he remained faithful to his principles and his commitment to a fairer and more prosperous Guinea.
His burial, scheduled for this Sunday in Mamou, will undoubtedly be an opportunity for the nation to pay its final respects. Guinea has lost one of its most valiant sons, but his legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of the people.
Rest in peace, Elhadj Boubacar Biro Diallo. Guinea will never forget you.
